CHARACTER NAME: Treebeard. Also known as Fangorn.

FANDOM: Lord of the Rings
CANON: After the storming of Isengard
WHAT THEY LOST: His size. Normally Treebeard is 14 feet tall.

So long as he is inside the castle he will be only six feet tall.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER:

Treebeard, like the other Ents, was created from the thought of Yavanna, the Vala of growing things. It isn't clear exactly when the Ents came into being, but it may have been around the time of or shortly after the awakening of the Elves. Treebeard was one of the original Ents, and may be over 11,000 years old by the time I am taking him from.

When he was young Treebeard walked throughout the great wood that covered the land west of the Misty Mountains as well as many other forests and lands that would be lost by the time of the War for the Ring. Sometime in these centuries Treebeard married an Entwife named Fimbrethil. But the Ents and Entwives would soon begin to grow apart. The Ents loved the wilderness, while the Entwives preferred orchards and gardens. And this would become the great tragedy of the Ents. The Entwives eventually left the wild places that the Ents loved and were lost. And with no females of their species there would never be any more children. Their race began to dwindle.

As time passed the great forests began to shrink. Treebeard and the Ents moved to Fangorn Forest, a remnant of the great woods of old at the southeastern end of the Misty Mountains. There they tended the trees and protected them from outsiders. At first there were visits between the forests and searches for the lost Entwives. But as time went on even those ceased. The Ents stopped leaving Fangorn and withdrew from the affairs of Middle Earth. Many of them began to sleep more and more, becoming more like trees themselves.

Little changed for centuries. The wizard Saruman came to dwell in the fortress os Isengard at the edge of Fangorn forest and orcs began to destroy trees on the edges of the forest. And then Treebeard encountered two creatures the likes of which he had never seen before. They introduced themselves as Hobbits - a race Treebeard did not recognize. The Hobbits were the first new thing that Treebeard had seen in many ages.

The Hobbits brought changes to Fangorn Wood. Because of their tale of the war beyond Fangorn, the Ents decided to join the war. After several days of discussion, naturally. Ents never decide anything quickly. In the end, Treebeard leads the Ents to war against Isengard. Their last war, he expected.

The first thing anyone notices about Treebeard (after getting over the surpise of meeting a talking tree) is his age. He is old. Immensely ancient. Gandalf says that he is the oldest living creature that still walks Middle Earth. He has watched thousands of years pass by with all their victories and tragedies, and that gives him a weight of experience that affects his every move.

He’s thoughtful and patient, but infuriatingly slow. In fact, he is slow in everything he does. He moves slowly and speaks slowly, and is prone to dedicating long lengths of time to introspection. Treebeard mentions that he once spent an entire week just breathing. His motto is 'don't be hasty'. Treebeard never makes a decision without considering everything relating to the situation. And he believes that if something is worth considering it is worth spending the time to make a decision. Even if thinking about something makes him upset he will purposefully cool himself off before making any decisions.

He is rather isolationist in nature. He cares for his trees and for his home. Treebeard is curious, true. He often goes in search of news of the outside world. But none of the news he ever received gave him the urge to act. Until Merry and Pippin arrived and forced him to realize that the war had already affected his home he was content to stay neutral. What did the wars of men matter to him? He refused to commit to a side in the war, because no one else in the war cared for the trees. What finally drove him to act was realizing how many of his trees had already died because of Saruman and the orcs.

As an addition to that, the two things he hates most are betrayal and orcs. He trusted Saruman, and was roused to rage when he realized that the wizard had used their friendship to learn things and to destroy the trees under his care. He hates orcs most of all, for all the trees they burned and cut.

He is untrusting and cautious, often warning the hobbits about being too free with information and trusting too easily. Yet he is also often rather cheerful. He has a certain love for reciting (and sometimes inventing) poetry.

Treebeard is a shepherd to the trees of Middle-Earth, and takes this duty very seriously. Treebeard considers all the trees to be of his domain and is very protective of the forest. As a result, he is wary of dwarves and men, but has no love at all for orcs. Elves he respects greatly, because they were the ones who once taught the trees to speak.

He carries a weight of grief with him. Treebeard is the leader of a dying people and has watched many loved things vanish. He still mourns for some of the woods and lands he knew that have long since vanished. But most of all he mourns for the Entwives and the children that might have been.

ABILITIES:
He's a tree. Stronger and tougher than any of the other races of Middle Earth. He can be injured by fire or axes, but it will take a great deal to do any lasting damage. Of his strength Treebeard says that he can split stone like the roots of trees do, only much faster. He has very high endurance as well, being able to walk across immense stretches forest without growing tired.

He is a shepherd of the trees, and can speak to them and rouse them to action if necessary.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

In Paradisa's lobby there stood a tree.  A twisted, battered ancient trunk of a tree.  If anyone happened to be in the lobby today, they might have thought it almost appeared like there was a face hidden in the gnarled branches and bark.  That those branches and that stump might almost be mistaken for arms and legs.

But Treebeard stood and thought, making no move to acknowledge his surroundings.  There was much to think of, after all.  It had been a very, very long time since he had encountered anything new.  But now, in such a short time, he had encountered a people who belonged to none of the lists.  And now, this.

Hasty.  Very, very hasty.  Even as human counted time, this was far too short to consider the meaning of all these changes.

With a sound somewhere between a sigh and the creak of ancient bark he opens his eyes and looks around the room.

"Hroom, so this is where the little people live.  Very small and shut in, it feels.  Very curious, very curious indeed. That the little people of the world would choose this.  But then, they are very small."

He trails off into musical mumbles as he slips into deep thought again.  Until, at last, he speaks aloud once more.

"Ah, but now I am quite small myself."

FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

[There is a sound halfway between the creak of ancient wood and a sigh.]

Hoom, hom.

This is a different matter of things, and no mistake. I have not seen the world from this angle since I was young, when I walked the great woods alone. Ah, there was a time!

Hm, but this is no time for an old Ent's memories.  Come.  Tell me what news you have of this world.

INTENT:
I've always found Treebeard one of the most intriguing characters in LOTR. He is ancient and alien, with concerns unlike any other character. And I have wanted an older character to go with the teenagers and children I've played here.

As for my plans in Paradisa, I expect Treebeard to spend some time at first adjusting to his new size. He has been a hermit for a very long time, and I expect life in Paradisa to be a big change for him.
